Stevenson is the only public high school in Illinois to receive four Blue Ribbon Awards for Excellence in Education from the U.S. Department of Education. SHS won the award in 1987, 1991, 1998, and 2002. Stevenson also received the U.S. Department of Education's New American High Schools Award in 1998. Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report have ranked Stevenson among the top 100 high schools in America, with both magazines selecting SHS in 2007. Stevenson was one of the few comprehensive public high schools to make the top 100 in U.S. News and World Report's rankings in 2007. Stevenson also is included annually in the School Watch and School Match listings of schools that offer features most sought by parents.

Stevenson offers more than 200 courses in communication arts, mathematics, science, social science, foreign languages, fine arts, applied arts and physical welfare. Classes are taught by a talented and experienced corps of teachers, three-fourths of them with a master's degree or more. Several teachers at SHS are considered by their peers to be among the country's foremost authorities in their fields. Some of the textbooks and teaching practices used around the United States can trace their roots to Stevenson High School.

Stevenson's average ACT score in 2006-07 was 25.3, the second-highest mark in school history. Stevenson's Advanced Placement program is among the nation's best. More than 20 AP classes are available and SHS regularly leads the Midwest region in AP participation and has ranked in the top five worldwide. Approximately 98 percent of SHS graduates attend college. Of that group, 8 in 10 will attend four-year colleges and universities while the remainder enroll at two-year schools. About 7 in 10 SHS graduates enroll at public colleges and universities. The Class of 2007 was awarded $18 million in college scholarships.

Stevenson has nearly 100 co-curricular clubs and activities open to students. Three-fourths of the student body is involved in co-curriculars, ranging from athletics to performing arts to civics. Stevenson's 76-acre campus features state-of-the-art facilities. All students have access to computers and nearly every classroom is capable of utilizing video, data and audio transmissions. A 1,200-seat performing arts center and an Olympic-sized swimming pool are other resources enjoyed by the community. The school has a college/career counseling center, two tutoring centers, two language laboratories, and a centralized technology area with five classrooms containing approximately 150 computers for student use.

Ravinia and the Chicago Botanic Gardens are two historic attractions that provide a wonderful and cultural experience in two of Buffalo Grove's neighboring communities.

The Ravinia Experience - Highland Park
There's more to Ravinia than merely the world's greatest music. For as many people who walk through Ravinia's gate each summer, there are just as many ways to enjoy what is called "The Ravinia Experience." Since 1904, Ravinia has been Chicago's "sound of summer," a place where you can meet up with your friends, have a wonderful time and hear some of the greatest music in the world.

For some, it all starts with a picnic picked up along the way, followed by a hop on the train and greeting your friends at your favorite spot on the lawn. Gradually, day turns into evening, and from the comfort of your perfect lawn spot, it culminates in a great concert by candlelight as you gaze at the stars above. For others, it's a dinner reservation at one of Ravinia's popular on-site restaurants followed by a casual stroll to the Pavilion, where you go to see and hear the stars on the stage.

Ravinia's 3,200-seat open-air, covered Pavilion is the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, jazz luminaries and legends, and some of the greatest pop, folk, blues and country musicians of today. Since the early 1900's, Ravinia has presented opera in concert. Today, it continues that tradition with rare productions of world music, as well as concert performances of opera with supertitles and musical theater.

Ravinia's expansive lawn offers an informal and comfortable place to picnic while enjoying Pavilion and Martin Theatre concerts, broadcast to the lawn audience through state-of-the-art sound system. Bring your own picnic or visit one of the on-site restaurants and food and beverage kiosks.

Chicago Botanic Garden - Northbrook The Chicago Botanic Garden, with its world-renowned plant collections and displays, is one of the country's most visited public gardens and a preeminent center for learning and scientific research. The 385-acre Garden features 23 display gardens and three native habitats, uniquely situated on nine islands surrounded by lakes.

From its founding, the Garden has hired leading architects, beginning with the master plan by John O. Simonds and Geoffrey Rausch. Edward Larabee Barnes designed the Education Center as the Garden's first building in 1977. The Malott Japanese Garden, Sansho-En, was completed in 1982. Throughout its existence, the Chicago Botanic Garden has developed gardens and educational facilities with a meticulous eye toward its original mission.

In every season at the Garden, there are activities, programs and breathtaking beauty throughout all 385 acres of woods, waterways, 23 formal display gardens and three natural areas. You can explore the wonders of the Garden by walking or by taking a tram, either the panoramic overview or the intimate view of the gardens of the main island.
